A Good Friday hike brought an unexpected sign of new life on this heavily burned-out peak in Franz Valley north of Calistoga. Amidst the blacked trunks of trees lost to the fire were vast swathes of new green grass, new life bursting forth, not deterred by past year’s devastation. Even some of the charred oaks were sporting new growth, signs that they’d survived. Amazingly the summit was one of the few parts not scorched, a tranquil haven in the midst of regrowth.
For this photo the main focus is the contrast between the dark burned trees in the background and the fresh green grass in the foreground. All else has been cropped out to simplify the image.
